Most call this movie “warm” and “winning,” but I’ll stick with “dated” and “lame.” And it has a nasty legacy — how many half baked indies about earnest artists struggling to make it (with tangential kooky sketch pieces) did it inspire? It is also disingenuious. It condemns black stereotypes, except when it helps a gag out, in which case it is okay to make a homie pimp joke. Bad, bad, bad.
