Like Waking Life or Russian Ark, this is another recent gimmick picture which, I feel, transcends the gimmick to be a flat out good film as it also pushes the envelope of cinema a little bit. A collection of scenes (or scenes of scenes? moments?) shot in one take from a stationary camera in master shot with short lenses. A pastiche of unhappy, overweight Swedes making their way through traffic, business conventions and hospitals. “It’s tough to be a human” one character remarks. The movie achieves its goal: it is as if we are seeing recognizable human behavior from the point of view of a visiting (and hidden) martian. A little slow at times — but stick it out and something hysterical or just plain odd is just around the corner. I was sorry to watch this on DVD. The tableau is grand and unless you are sitting two inches from your screen you are going to miss some of the color in the background.
