Top Hat, Swing Time, Shall We Dance, The Barkleys of Broadway. These are the great Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films. Carefree? Pretty frickin’ awful. I can’t in good conscious give a Fred & Ginger movie a bad grade, so I’ll stick with the “Gentleman’s C.”
Entertaining, though, to see how the “psychological trade” is depicted. A psychiatrist is basically a witch doctor to the writers of Carefree. Also – apparantly – eating odd food combinations (lobster and mayonnaise, for example) will give you vivid and “important” dreams. Best though is when Ginger puts on her “mammy” voice and leads the entire Westchester country club in song with “The Yam.” Enjoy this clip.
