Not every respected novel should be a movie.

This is fascinating only in its dated-ness. For a brief moment in the early 1970s there was a spate of movies where sexually frustrated (and frustrating) Jewish men were very hip. But that time is over and it ain’t coming back.

If rereading Saul Bellow and watching Bye Bye Braverman is your thing, maybe you’ll like this movie. But probably not, because it is 45 minutes too long and has an absurd crime sub-plot. Giamatti is always good, but he can’t save this.
