Paths of Glory meets Amelie meets. . . a very long episode of “CSI.” If you want your World War One with whimsy, this is the film for you. Entertaining, even dazzling, but certainly predictable. Not as good as “Amelie” and not as good as any of the real marverlous WWI movies that are in the canon. But somehow the whole package stays afloat enough to be engaging. (And, if one really wanted to, one could argue about the ending. If I may present a spoiler: did the dude really return safely? If someone has amnesia, are they really the same person?) I must point out that I saw this film in, perhaps, my favorite movie theater on the planet, The Cable Car in Providence, RI. This was the first “art house” theater I ever went to (“where do these movies come from?”) and it has left a strong mark on my soul. Coffee at a movie theater? Hwhat? The best thing about the CC is that there are couches instead of seats. Imagine a normal medium-sized theater with its rows of seats ripped out and comfy couches in its place. Man oh man the Film Forum could learn a thing or two! (Also, all you can eat self-serve popcorn!) Alas, the projector is probably 75 years old and the film did lose focus once or twice, but, hey, come on, free popcorn!!!! Even better was leaving the theater to find that it was snowing like crazy!
