Certainly worth seeing, but not the eye-opening masterpiece it could have been. What wider goalposts are there than militant Islam’s treatment of women? Is there a more enraging topic in the world today? The problem with this film is that after the shock and awe of the first hour (and seeing these women in their blue burkhas is like watching science fiction — scenes in the old village bear a striking resemblance to the Star Wars films) the storytelling kinda sags. The main character is a symbol, not a person. We hold our breath with her as she is nearly discovered but her character, unlike, say, the kid in Europa, Europa or even Yentl, we don’t connect with her on a gut level. At least I didn’t. Osama is a good film. Not a great film.
