Some other things you may want to do while listening to ELO:
– build model airplanes, like Stukkas, Messerschmidts and Mustangs
– masturbate into an old tube sock while wearing a pair of headphones
– gaze out the window and wonder when the next Renaissance Fair will be coming to New Jersey
“Fire on High” — for years — was used by CBS sports as theme music for various shows — I seem to remember it being used for golf all the time. Along with “Love’s Theme” by Love Unlimted Orchestra, it was one of a handful of 70s song you’d constantly hear advertisers and TV networks using before that became commonplace years later.
I figured at least some of that ELO stuff would register. I still say New World Record, along with Heaven Tonight, are the best archetypes of 70s pop. Two bands hitting their stride and doing exactly what they should be doing.
I keep trying to listen to “New World Record” in its totality, but I can’t get past track 2 — Telephone Line.
Each time I hear it I wind up sobbing in a foetal position, cursing myself for being unable to get up the nerve to talk to Michelle with the feathered blonde hair. I saw her just yesterday at the rec center, she was playing knock hockey (against that asshole Brad) and when she leaned over allllll the way you could almost see down her shirt. I think she caught me staring at her in the mirror as she was putting on her sparkle lip gloss.
In addition to Fire On High — the other tune I remember being used by sports (or maybe it was channel 7 Eyewitness News) was the music from Cool Hand Luke — the sequence when they are tarring up the road.
The first time I saw the movie it totally took me out — all I could think about was Roger Grimsbe!!!
Also — don’t be frightened if you catch me in my new ELO look.
I’m getting fitted for a humongous British Jewfro — plus I’m sporting some excellent tight slacks and I’m carrying a clear plexiglass cello with blue neon trim around with me wherever I go.
