I saw my first episode of American Idol last night! I know why this is such a hit. With a group of people (actually, there were only 3 of us) it is tremendous fun. You can root for your favorites, boo for the ones who stink and laugh at the insanely pompous exec producer Simon. (Even the other hosts on the show display open contempt for him.) The only dude I thought was a little bit original — this geeky 16 yr old who looks like Conan O’Brien and sounds like Morrisey, was universally panned by the jury (although the audience seemed to dig him) so I voted for him. There were three black women who sounded great but indistiguishable from one another, one black guy who was great and fun (and Ann’s favorite and, apparantly, the odds-on favorite to win the whole thing) and the rest of the crew plainly sucked. I only wished I didn’t have to work when this was on every night? Do I dare fire up the VCR?
