Pretty damned depressing. I avoided this during its TV broadcast but figured, since I recently read 102 Minutes I could take it. I was prepared for everything except for the sounds of the jumpers landing outside the lobby command post. Yes, this is the doc with the two French brothers featuring the only footage of the first plane hitting the north tower. You’ve seen that clip a thousand times, but never have you seen it and heard the only reasonable reaction — a man shouting “Holy Shit! Holy Shit! Holy Fucking Shit!” I’m not being a wise guy; there is a true profundity in his reaction. The way he repeats himself, the cadence, the shock in his voice. That is what shocked me out of my chair, having seen the image so many times. The movie itself is mostly fly on the wall stuff — and I applaud the filmmakers for just showing the footage in a very raw state. (This is the only footage from inside the towers.) However, while it could have been much worse, there are dopey narrative threads used to “keep the story moving” that I found both unnecessary and, frankly, offensive. There’s a whole “who will live, who will die” subplot that is hinted at that cheapens the whole production. It really pissed me off. Anyway, now I’ve seen this film and don’t want to see it ever again.
