William Eggleston is a Jedi. He’s been one of my favorite visual artists since Bryan Riss hipped me to him in 1992. Almereyda goes for a Chris Marker-esque approach to documenting Eggleston and his creative process. There is just a shred of exposition, and then you are there with him. . .wandering around a bland American town (at the behest of Gus Van Sant) doing your best to see what he sees. When Eggleston does open his mouth. . .well. . .I turned to Ann at the end of the movie and said: Maybe it’s true — to be a truly great artist you have to be a fucking crazy person. Interesting film, great subject.
