There’s an easy trap out there for many of us, the desire to champion a low-budget or foreign film because we all like rooting for the underdog. The Spanish sci-fi feature Timecrimes has been a darling of online critics since its debut at Sundance. It will finally be released in theaters this weekend. And while I enjoyed the film a great deal, I honestly wonder if there’d be this amount of hoopla if the picture, say, starred a yamhead like Val Kilmer and was set in New Jersey.
