The Menagerie is up there with “Tribbles” and “Amok Time” as the most famous of Trek Episodes. For those of you unsure, it’s the one with the crater-faced dude (Captain Pike) in the wheelchair who beeps yes or no. It is the only two-parter in The Original Series. And it is also one of the earliest examples of what we used to call “repurposed content.” In other words: any way to squeeze a few sheckles out of that old, first pilot that’s collecting dust? Before we see Jeffrey Hunter and the Shouty Spock in flashback, we get to see Kirk have the Enterprise tricked away from him from Oddly Conspiratorial Spock. Turns out he’s just being SUPER loyal. But we’ll learn that in part two. . .as we make our way further to Talos IV!!!!
