J Hoberman’s book, subtitled Movies, Media, and the Mythology of the Sixties is the most fun 400 pages devoted to the snake head eating its own tail of politics and pop culture that I’ve ever read. From Sputnik to Reagan saying “Make My Day,” anyone who finds themselves continually drawn to thinking about Cold War politics and thinks movies are important really must read this.
