There is, alas, a major problem with tone. Half the movie is just another zippy Trek episode with all our favorite characters back for some fun. The other half is, like, a serious, ominous, probing film. Some scenes, if you tell yourself that you don’t know who Kirk and Spock are, have a feel similar to 2001, or any other heavy journey film. This may be the Trek franchise’s only attempt at art — not entirely successful, but worthy of recognition at least. Made a big, big impression on me as a kid — even if I couldn’t follow the plot.
