“Wrong Way Up” by Brian Eno and John Cale has long been high atop my list of favorite albums not too many people know about. In the past 48 hours I’ve listened to it in its entirety about five times. It’s just terrific and, dare I say, hard to pin down. Is it just new wave pop? Or is there something more? Cale and Eno’s vocal styles are very flat — almost spoken — but when they “sing” together it creates one of the oddest harmonies I’ve ever heard. It’s hardly Crosby Stills and Nash — but it is equally remarkable. If you are having trouble finding MP3s online lemme know & I will burn you a copy.
