I’ve read two books on Wilder and in both of them “Fedora” is basically brushed off as a mistake in judgement. While the plotting does get very silly toward the end, I think this movie has the potential to become recognized as a classic in the gay community. That isn’t a knock against the movie or the gay community; this movie deals with a lot of the themes that I’ve noticed are always present in films the gay community treasures. (One could also argue that this whole movie is a ripoff of “All About Eve,” “Sunset Blvd.” and “What Ever Happened To Baby Jane?”) There is a hideous obsession with youth, there’s some serious bitchiness from an old bat in a wheelchair plus an unnatural obsession with Michael York (!). Also, set on a lovely Greek Isle, some gorgeous photography, fantastic sets and lovely gowns and wigs. If you find that you like this sort of thing (I remember, years ago, a young gay man telling me he had seen the dreadful “Death Becomes Her” three times in the theater. When I questioned this he replied, “You straight guys don’t understand”) I strongly recommend checking this out. On its own, non-camp terms, it isn’t the worst mystery in the world, either.
