Last weekend I wound up at a meeting of the Philadelphia Ethical Society. I’d always wanted to go to one of these meetings and since the Philly branch is across the square from Garrett’s apartment (and since the Wawa is across the square from Garrett’s apartment and we were getting much needed coffee on Sunday morning) we popped in. I dug the people there — a collection of hardcore old lefties (most of which looked Jewish) and a sprinkling of young people (some of which were hot chicks.) I instantly got a good vibe off of them and thought I would enjoy speaking with them, getting to know them. I dug that there was a guy playing Bach on a piano, and playing well. But I must admit that there was just as much bogus dogma and ritual as there would be at a Friday night schuul service. Rise for this, turn to page X to sing our opening song, let’s take a moment of silence now. I guess I was just expecting a rap session and a cool guest speaker.

The guest speaker was actually the head of the society. And, apart from being a bore, he was a douche.

The sermon we heard was called “What Next?” in response to the election and. . .much to my chagrin. . .the leader of the Ethical Society told us that the way to win back the country was to try and get more people to the Ethical Society. At which point some dudes came around with tins looking for donations. I’m not kidding.
