I have a knee-jerk dislike of biopics. Unless that person’s struggle can be seen as a symbol of something greater (cf. “Spartacus”) biopics just tend to be, you know, about some guy and the shit he did (cf. “Edison the Man.”) “Walk the Line” is about as good as this latter type of biopic can get. It is well put together, breezes along, has terrific music and performances. I was greatly impressed by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. Especially Witherspoon, who I never really gave much credit to before. Phoenix’s singing is dynamite and Witherspoon passes. When you hear an actual Johnny-June duet over the closing credits, though, it does remind you how great the genuine articles were. Still, well done. And quite fun!
