Without question the best Ashville, NC-based West African slash surf guitar band I’ve ever heard is Toubab Krewe.
This dude was playing an elaborate instrument called a Kora. In keeping with Gen Y-Jambase philosophy, he not only played it straight (as trained by the masters in Mali) but he also miked it such that when rubbed a certain way it sounded like a DJ was scratching.
Of the many nifty percussive elements was this beige thing that looked like a garbage lid. The general effect was one of awesomeness.
