This surprised me, as I have long been a champion of De Palma’s early films, and I’m generally a fan of New York 60’s indie productions. But this movie is a shallow bore. It has little of the playful formalism normally found in De Palma’s work and the supporting performance by a young, chubby cheeked Robert Denero [sic] is pretty forgettable. Despite location on the very picturesque Shelter Island there’s not much to look at here. The only thing of merit are the few group scenes with overlapping dialogue and well placed cuts. But you can see this done much better in any Altman film of the era.
