A pretty straightforward adventure episode. Dr. Daystrom (Blacula to you, sucka) wants to replace starship personell with a supercomputer, the M-5. In a remarkable parallel with the HAL 9000, the shit soon hits the fan. (What’s with people in the 60s thinking computers were gonna take their jobs? Didn’t they know they’d all be subcontracted out to India?) McCoy, predictably, blathers on about how computers can’t feel, dammit! And Kirk just doesn’t like being told what to do. Daystrom’s intentions are good (man need not take dangerous missions; they can stay safe and “work toward progress”) but blood is shed and Daystrom goes bananas. Kirk eventually undoes the Ultimate Computer and I bet you can’t guess how. That’s right! He uses logic to foil the computer and force it to shut down. How many times is that now?
