Considered Pasolini’s masterpiece — I say, “Gimme ‘King of Kings.'” A little to straightforward for my tastes — indeed, taking all the dialogue straight from scripture makes this Bible picture almost as Python-esque as “Life of Brian.” Use of anachronistic music may’ve shocked them back then — but, I dunno, to me it feels like a last minute technique slapped on a movie with no technique. Focus is lost a few times in this picture, camera pans re-direct themselves when subjects don’t appear where they’re supposed to be. Some folks on the imdb call this verite, I call it sloppy. Many of Pasolini’s later films (“Decameron” and “Arabian Nights” come to mind) are sloppy, but at least there is lots of good sex and debauchery to keep you involved. This Jesus guy and his holier-than-thou attitude. . .it gets tiresome real quick. The Jesus presented here isn’t all that kind or loving — he’s really a drag, frankly. . .hardly the longhaired hippie from the far superior “Jesus Christ Superstar,” “Godspell” or “Ultrachrist!”
