This Berlin Wall parallel has all the action of Wrath of Khan and all the humor of The Voyage Home. It also takes a page right out of George Lucas’ book. Like Indiana Jones and Star Wars it places the emphasis on fun, early cinema tropes. So much of The Undiscovered Country is Spock hunting down clues for the big whodunnit? Then there’s the Great Escape sequence. A little comedy with the Klingons and a nice “we’re all back together” finish with Captain Sulu and the Excelsior.

I remember seeing this for the first time in the theater (thrilled, obviously) then having that shocking feeling at seeing the “sign-off” from the cast at the end. I knew going in that this was likely to be the last film, but to see that up there kinda took the dilithium out of my warp core. But it’s a nice finish. A perfect, albeit unsubtle at times, movie-movie that is virtually impossible not to like.

My earlier review.
