Perhaps the most thoroughly enjoyable Fuller films I’ve seen. Grifters, turncoats, commies and molls. Hilarious dialogue, hammy acting, hardnosed staging — it’s all here! NYC is presented on Los Angeles soundstages with a thumbnail police house, subway station, Chinese restaurant, Bowery tenement and Corlear’s Hook rivershack. A perfect B movie with quick pacing and a none-too-complex plot. 80 minutes of happiness.
