The first regular episode of Voyager isn’t too bad. We’re still meeting the characters (indeed, WHO will be our chief engineer?) and B’elanna Torres is shaping up to be the most interesting one. I like Captain Janeway, but there are some cheesy close-ups of her winning smile that probably shoulda ended up cut. The techno-babble reaches a point of such parody that when Tom Paris admits he has no idea what is going on, it is a solid moment of comedy – and a bit of a departure for all of Trek. That’s gonna be the thing: DS9 has distinguished itself from TNG – will Voyager be able to do the same?
