Kinda like “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg” meets “Wings of Desire” meets “Sunrise” meets “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” meets “Rope.” But not quite as good as any of the films I’ve mentioned. The theatrical lighting, the dissolves, the scrims, the “stagecraft” as Coppola says 900 times in the commentary track are, indeed, all terrific. The problem is the story. There’s too much going on on the surface to ever get to know or care about the characters. And the casting is a problem, too. (Who in their right mind leaves Nastassja Kinski for Teri Garr???) But lots of love and respect for trying this fluid-camera filmed-theater phantasmagorical orgy of excess. And Tom Waits’ original score (when not being sung too on-the-nose by Crystal Gayle) is terrific, too.
