A fine minor work added to Woody Allen’s canon. Some people get bent out of shape because his films seem unrealistic. They were always unrealistic! Just because NYC property was more affordable in 1977 didn’t make Annie Hall’s balcony any less of a fairy tale. Now that Woody’s alleged out-of-touched-ness has become such a thing each new gorgeous apartment master shot gets an adoring laugh. A laugh! When else have you been in a theater where the sets are given such attention? Melinda and Melinda is also a success because of Will Ferrell. A lot of Woody surrogates (John Cusack, Kenneth Branagh) struck me as less-than because they were always channeling Woody. Since Ferrell is a gifted comic on his own he is able to use his own schtick and be funny. Anyway, this is a good movie . . .I even liked the boring parts. . . somehow those overblows, preposterous, pseudo-philosophical cocktail party conversations speak to me.
