Just because Hitchcock directed doesn’t make it a work of genius. There are a handful of really neat visual sequences (the safe-robbery scene ranks as one of the better of his career) but I couldn’t get over just how idiotic the story was. It was as if the opening scenes of “Psycho” were grafted onto “Vertigo” and then the worst pop-psychology hammer was used to mash it all together. I also now know from where De Palma stole the end of “Obsession.” Still, it looks nice, but this may be the only time I’ve snickered in derision at a Hitchcock film.
