As a necessary run-up to “Mulholland Drive,” this movie is kinda fun to watch and was probably important to Lynch’s creative process to make. His first completely abstract film since Eraserhead (I think “Fire Walk With Me” is a shred too narrative to be included in this bunch) Lynch succeeds if, indeed, the desire was to place the viewer in the center of an uncomfortable, confusing, annoying dream. My only problem with the picture is that there is very little humor in the film until the last reel — levity and surrealism need not be mutually exclusive (especially if we’re expected to watch them for 129 minutes.)
