The greatest non-narrative film ever made, and one of the five greatest films ever made period. Tonight I experienced the Big K as wallpaper, mesmerizing attuned party guests as wallpaper. For the first time I watched people watch Koyaanisqatsi. My admiration for this work of art grows every time I encounter it. We are better, more experienced world citizens after viewing it. Here’s what I wrote in 2003: 71) Koyaanisqatsi (1983), Godfrey Reggio, A+
If you believe that art can uncover an inexpressible truth, than you must see “Koyaanisqatsi.” Talk about something where you notice something new each time you see it. One thing I like so much is how there are no set rules to this film. Just when you think you’ve “got” its form, there’s something thrown in that breaks the rhythm. I like “Koyaanisqatsi” more than “2001: A Space Odyssey,” and I think they are both very similar.
