Avant-garde filmmaker, dancer, actor, choreographer, anthropologist, author, lecturer, Voodooist, serial matrimonialist, West Village den mother and zaftig Russo-American Jewess gets the “we love you” bio-doc that, eventually, every artist who ever did anything will receive. In Deren’s case she deserves it, but you’d never know it from this film as none of her original work (like, for example, the 15 minute 1944 masterpiece “At Land”) is allowed to stand on its own without dopey cuts or narration. Deren’s friends Stan Brakhage and Jonas Mekas make good appearances as talking heads. Deren’s friends John Cage and Joseph Campbell do not, as they are dead. Music by John Zorn.
