I part company with other Trekkers here. I disagree with this episode on a fundamental level. In the world of Star Trek there would be no discrimination or sexism of petty jealousies. Therefore, one would not suffer from the shyness we see in Reg Barclay. Barclay gets so bad at times it feels like he as Asperger’s — this would certainly be cured by the time of the United Federation of Planets.

Another thing I can’t stand is when an episode doesn’t follow the simple rules of the Holodeck. The Holodeck can seem larger than it actually is and you can “walk into it” in that the floor will move and the images “beyond the plane” of the wall will come closer until they occupy three dimensions. Yes. This I will accept. I will not accept that others (LaForge, when he barges in) can be in a “different part” of the Holodeck than the program-runner (Barclay, napping in Dr. Crusher’s lap near a lake.) No! It violates the very clearly laid down rules and makes the whole Holodeck business (which is somewhat suspicious to begin with) seem like a joke. I hate that. I HATE that.
