I don’t remember Donnie Darko too too well from the first and only previous time seeing it, but I remember liking it a great deal. The director’s cut felt a little fat to me, and the one thing I noticed as very new – excerpts from “The Philosophy of Time Travel” – killed a lot of the mystery for me. The first version had trace elements of some grand, earth-shattering truth just around the corner. Shedding too much light on it turns it just into more SF gobbldygook. As a general rule, I always prefer the “producer’s cut.”
