“Before Night Falls” starts off real well but runs out of gas in the last act. I couldn’t keep straight who all of his buddies were. He had a bunch of friends throughout the movie, then, at the end, there was one who was his best friend. And I had no idea who this guy was. Kinda deadened the impact for me. Ann admitted the same thing, so I know it wasn’t my fault. Well shot, though, and Javier Bardem’s performance in the lead is stunning. Why do dictatorships have to suck so much?
Another thing:
During a scene where the main character is floating in the sea, helpless to the elements, they play the music by Popul Vuh that was used in Aguirre: the Wrath of God. You know — that movie where a man floats to his death, helpless to the elements! That’s a foul! Unacceptable!
