Sweet, tender, finely observed. Is this really the same director who gave us, “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”? The film was released in 1973 and set in 1962. It’s amazing how much society changed in those 11 years. I’d go so far as to say that there has never been a larger cultural change than those 11 years. How different would a period piece set in 1994 be? Anyway, this movie has an undercurrent of real sadness; the closing crawl is jarringly dark. Also, use of the Beach Boys’ “All Summer Long” over closing credits is stolen from The Simpsons!!
AKA Dullsville, USA. Has there ever been a group of kids who needed psychedelics more desperately than the cast of characters of “American Graffiti?” What a white, conventional, timid crowd. As a kid, I was impressed with all the cruisin’ down the strip, but wow, seeing this again, it was just plain boring. Marcy fell asleep, I hit the fast forward button.
