I don’t want to say anything too drastic, but I think this may be one of the few examples where the movie is better than the book. But I’m not sure. I read the book 10 years ago or so. Either way, this is a dynamite film, and I’m so glad it was Linklater and not Gilliam or someone else who did it. It is the Linklater vibe — the Slacker aesthetic, for lack of a better term — that makes this movie. The rotoscoping is just gravy. The movie would work fine if it was shot on 16mm. But it ISN’T! And the rotoscoping is SO FUCKING COOL!! All praise to Robert Downey, Jr, by the way, who deserves a best supporting Oscar for this movie. Hats way off.
