Valkyrie (2008), Bryan Singer, B+
Really quite interesting. You hear “they tried to kill Hitler with a briefcase bomb but it didn’t work” and that’s pretty much all you know. There’s actually, like, a whole crazy story there!
Singer wisely doesn’t play these guys all as saints. Some were just careerists who saw the writing on the wall and wanted to get in good with the Allies. And others were people with courage to stand up. A decade late, sure, but Monday morning quarterbacking is easy.
Some might say there’s a little bit of Nazi fetishism going on, but is it Bryan Singer’s fault Albert Speer designed such cool buildings? The swastika-tiled swimming pool may’ve been a bit much…….
