Here’s an example of an episode that is good but not great – and it could have been great if it was a little more focused. We see Jadzia Dax grooming a young Trill for a potential gig as a host, putting him through the ringer as Curzon Dax once did to her. As they are zipping back and forth through the wormhole they get snagged on a piece of “space seaweed” (say what?) and it turns out that this space seaweed is a “protouniverse” that is developing a la Lisa Simpson’s science project. Worse than that, it is expanding, and, as such, will eventually destroy the station. Oy vey – what to do?! Kira says step on it – but that brand of pragmatism is frowned upon in Starfleet. So…what do they do? They – um – I’m not exactly sure. They just put it back where they found it. Why didn’t they do this in the first place, if this is an option? It won’t still expand and cause problems? I don’t know. This goes unanswered and, to my gut anyway, seems like a really dumbass ending.

We also learn that Odo doesn’t step on ants – making him, I suppose, a Space Jain.
